Three Reasons to love the Quarter Cabin Block

Today, I’m taking a moment to share a little bit more about what I think it pretty much pure quilt block pattern magic: the Quarter Cabin Log Cabin quilt block variation. It’s been front of mind recently thanks to my Parquet Party quilt pattern (which is made up of two giant 16” Quarter Cabin block variations!).

It’s a construction technique I come back to again and again. And each time I feel like I rediscover what an absolute delight it is to play with, whether I’m working with a repeating block pattern or using it in an overall quilt design.

So, without further ado, here are the top three reasons why I love the Quarter Cabin block (think of it like a little love letter to the block layout):

BUILT-IN Dynamic Design

Unlike its traditional Log Cabin block counterpart, this variation is built from the corner instead of the center, and from there they unfold, introducing an asymmetric and dynamic design element that creates a visually intriguing pattern. It's a small twist that makes a big impact! And I think this feature is what makes it so particularly fun to play with in repeating block patterns as it allows you ways to “connect” the patchwork at the edges of the blocks, whether it’s by lining up the logs or playing with an optical illusion of continuing the line of the logs under other blocks (like in Parquet Party).

Effortless OMBRE

Because of it’s clear “corner out” construction, the Quarter Log Cabin block variation is a playground for color play. Whether you're into bold contrasts or subtle gradients, the block's construction allows for effortless color gradation. Watch as your quilt blocks transform from light to dark or vice versa, creating a mesmerizing visual effect that keeps the eye moving. And if you’re working with a repeating block pattern, think of the possibilities to keep that ombre growing!

Easily Adaptable

Whether you're aiming for a traditional look or a contemporary twist, whether your blocks are large or small, with a simple change of the widths of your “logs” (why not work with narrower logs towards the center, then gradually increasing the size towards the edges?), the shape (how about adding in a half rectangle triangle?), or the ends (add in an half square triangle where the logs join or try ending the logs with a flying geese at the edge?), this simple block can quickly morph into something completely unexpected!

So, what’ll be your next Quarter Cabin quilt Project?

The Quarter Log Cabin block is just a playground of possibility! Between its asymmetric layout and its built-in potential for color gradation, as well as all its design potential, why not try pulling out this classic layout next time you’re at the design drawing board?
