My Four Favorite Classic Log Cabin Quilt Block Layouts

Among the myriad of classic quilting patterns, the log cabin quilt block stands out for its versatility and charm (at least to my eye!).

I love the potential variations of piecing within the block itself as well as all the possibilities when arranging the quilt top. Even the most “basic” classic block layout can be rotated and turned and played with to come up with something fresh and new!

Here are my four favorite classic log cabin quilt block layouts that I hope will inspire you to dive into the world of log cabin quilts!

And to help get you started, I've got free one-page downloads to create each block as well as full patterns with complete cutting instructions to make the standard range of quilt sizes in the shop.

1. Classic Four-Color Log Cabin Quilt Arrangement

Step into quilting tradition with the Classic Four-Color Log Cabin pattern. This layout honors the iconic log cabin block, with each block consisting of “layers” of four different colors arranged around a central square. The magic of this pattern lies in its simplicity and the endless design possibilities it offers. By simply rotating your blocks, you can create a variety of stunning patterns and designs, from zig-zags, to squares, to chevrons, and beyond!

2. A Seven-ColorS Log Cabin Quilt Arrangement

For those who love playing with color, the Classic Seven-Color Log Cabin block is a delight. Each block features seven colors, and it can be as wild or as strict of a color-layout as you’d like! Why not try an ombre color palette, gradually transitioning from light to dark or vice versa? The seven-color arrangement is a great opportunity to feature beautiful color gradients for a sophisticated, harmonious look that is sure to impress!

3. A Modern Mix Log Cabin Quilt Arrangement

If you’re looking for a contemporary twist on the traditional log cabin block, the Modern Mix layout is for you. This arrangement features an asymmetrical layout that breathes new life (and adds a little bit of negative space) into the classic design. By playing with your color palette, you can create a dynamic and modern quilt that still pays homage to the original. The Modern Mix is perfect for those who want to experiment with a more minimalistic and modern vibe with their patchwork.

4. A Scrappy Log Cabin Quilt Arrangement

For a fun and whimsical take on the log cabin block, try making a scrappy arrangement. This pattern is scrap-friendly or can be made with yardage, making it a versatile option for quilters. Whether you want to be super intentional or throw caution to the wind, this pattern celebrates the beauty of imperfection and invites you to embrace the unexpected. A scrappy Log Cabin quilt is a joyful, vibrant quilt that showcases the charm of the classic pattern!
