three ways to expand on the behemoth block
I originally designed the Behemoth Block pattern as a canvas to practice my hand stitching: it’s perfect as is for a mini quilt or a pillow with lots and lots of dense hand quilting. But it’s also the perfect pattern to run with and transform and expand upon! The pattern’s straightforward construction allows you to riff without a headache: here are three different ways to take this pattern and transform it into your own design (sashing optional).
So grab your copy of the pattern here, read through these ideas to get your ideas flowing, then go for it!
1. Repeat
This first idea is pretty simple and straightforward (but definitely not boring): try repeating your blocks to start! I love making four at a time as they make a great square crib sized 40” x 40” quilt:
If you’d like to make a slightly larger rectangular crib sized quilt, try playing with your Fabric A to create some sashing and borders around the Fabric B-F “center” of the block. I like playing with 2” or 4” when it comes to my sashing and borders. In the image below, I’ve added a side border that’s 4” wide to mimic the right sides of the block, as well as a 2” border at the bottom. Plus I widened the top of the bottom two blocks to create a 4” center horizontal “sashing” piece. Another great look is 4” sashing and borders in Fabric A across the whole quilt top!
2. Mirror
Mirroring the block is another great way to play with your blocks! Make two original, two mirrored, and voila, you get this cool variation:
3. Mix & Match
Another easy way to play with your blocks is to change up the colors of each one. And to go really wild and crazy, try mirroring two of them again, like so:
And if you’d like to frame them up, why not add some 2” sashing in between the blocks:
So, go ahead, think big with your blocks!
I love how with small tweaks, this block can turn into something totally new! And because of it’s size, it’s quick and easy to play around without having to wait too long to see the end result. No matter which way you go, whether you make the pattern to the letter or tweak and adjust, or expand and blow up, I cannot wait to see you make the Behemoth Block your own. Make sure to share your quilt over on the ‘gram and tag it #BehemothBlockQuilt and me @broadclothstudio (because I don’t want to miss it).
